Stepping on the Path, Staying on the Path:
Committment to a Consistent Practice

This year’s expo theme of Mountain Mind conjures, in me, thoughts of mountain paths and the mental transformations experienced from who we are when we begin on a path to who we become upon completion.
Just a couple blocks from my parents’ home was a trailhead to the summit of Squaw Peak, in Phoenix. I grew up there in a house full of boys, my 6 brothers and their friends. The male energy of that environment was palpable. One day in a fit of anger I left the house and began walking up the mountain. By the time I was back down and stepping off that path, my whole world had changed. I had forgiven everyone and everything. I am fortunate to have made the discovery in my teens; that to get to the spiritual I could exert myself physically. Today the yoga path mimics this understanding.
Through opening our bodies we can free our minds. We need only to step onto the path and commit to seeking the summit. Therein lies the challenge. Committment requires consistency, which can be achieved through ritual. Let’s explore the concept of creating ritual through mindful participation in your everyday activities, making them part of your yoga practice. Move from the exclusively sangha/group experience (i.e. the weekly or semi-weekly class) to the daily personal practice. This is an all levels class.
