Transforming our Lives and our World
Rama Jyoti Vernon, internationally renowned Yoga teacher, has been integral to the evolution of Yoga in the United States over the past forty years. Her foundation of deep spirituality was a gift at birth. Her interest in metaphysics and mysticism began as a child and was encouraged by parents who were pioneers in holistic health. Ultimately, she became one of America’s first Yoga teachers, and was instrumental in bringing many great teachers from India to the U.S. She has studied with distinguished yoga masters including BKS Iyengar, Sant Keshavadas, Swami Veda Bharati, TKV Desikachar, Sri Aurobindo through Dr. Haridas Chaudhuri (Founder, California Institute for Integral studies) and others. In addition to her extensive background in asana and the Yoga Sutras, Rama Jyoti is extremely well versed in the philosophy, lineages and healing benefits of Yoga. Her unique approach emphasizes opening the body by extending and breathing into each pose as a deeply spiritual offering.
Rama Jyoti has founded a number of organizations, including the International Yoga College, the California Yoga Teachers' Association and Unity in Yoga International. She is one of the originators of the Yoga Journal and has devoted much of her life to peace missions throughout the world including the Soviet Union, Israel, and Central America.
Breath-Based Practice
Saturday, February 14th 9:45 am - 11:15 am
Club Kilimanjahro Ballroom
While breathing is fundamental to yogic practices and life functions, daily stress, chronic breathing maladies and environmental pollutants affect our ability to fully receive the benefits of the breath. How we breathe can deepen our yoga practice, alleviate problems and provide a more vital lifestyle. Rama Jyoti has developed an asana practice that incorporates the breath in an unparalleled manner. She will introduce her signature approach to using the breath as a way to open the body to enhance asana, deepen spiritual practices and enliven day-to-day activities.
Keynote Speech: Global Health and Healing – From Self to World
Sunday, February 15th 9:00 am - 9:30 am
Howell Avenue Annex
At an early age Rama Jyoti was exposed to mystics, great spiritual leaders, and natural healers whose experience was simultaneously traditional and ahead of its time. Through her personal experiences and the teachings of her parents and other great healers, Rama Jyoti has found ways to stimulate, heal and renew the body. Additionally, she has traveled extensively on missions of mediation and healing on a global level. Rama Jyoti will share stories from her vast background, and speak on the spiritual principles of resolving conflict in our lives and in our world. She will explore the relationship of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras to the healing of self and the healing between nations.
Transforming Our Lives and Our World
Sunday, February 15th 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Howell Avenue Annex
Through her work in citizen diplomacy and conflict resolution around the world, Rama Jyoti has developed a system for healing the individual and between nations, based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. In this workshop, she will explore these ancient teachings and bring them into the physical practice, integrating philosophy with asana. Through her unique approach, she will present a philosophical system and physical postures for transforming conflict in our lives and our world by demonstrating, through asana, how spiritual principles can be a valuable tool.
